How to control an Air Motor

Valving Required: |

3-way valve (will permit coasting of motor) with muffler on exhaust port to prevent contamination ingestion when shutting valve off.
|
2-way valve (will give a fast decelerating stop): not recommended in very fine dust (e.g. fiberglass) environments. When the valve is shut, the motor chamber may suck in some dirt through the front shaft seal and bearing.

Alternative valving to prevent contaminant ingestion in dirty environments (will coast at shut off).
Regulator set at 2 - 5 psi. Keeps a positive pressure within the motor when it is not running. |
OR The 3-Way approach (will coast at shut off).

More Air Motors Control
- Dual rotation - continuous either way (not very common)
- Coasting - watch for contaminant ingestion
- Sudden Stop - contaminant ingestion through shaft is possible
- Medium Coasting with positive pressure at stop - no contamination from outside possible
- Sudden Stop with positive pressure at stop - no contamination from outside possible. This circuit may be used if the motor has to be submerged. Can be used with separate pressure (torques) in each direction.
- Dual roation 3-Way Valves - this approach permits a lot of flexibility especially with solenoid valves.
- Pressure right rotation
- Pressure left rotation
- Pressure both sides for a medium coasting
- Exhaust both side for a full coasting
- Speed Control
- Constant Torque - variable pressure controlled by torque transducer in a closed loop.
- Constant RPM - variable pressure controlled by shaft encoder in a closed loop.
